EMC Announces Restructured Environmental Internship Programme |
EMC has been operating Environmental Internship Programme (EIP) over the past four years. Interns work at EMC's offices on full time basis for an average period of eight weeks and a monthly stipend is paid to them based on the background, educational qualifications, work experience etc.
Thirty interns have participated in the EIP over last four years. These interns have come from premier institutes in India like Indian Institute of Technology, Centre of Environment Planning Technology, Pune University, Symbiosis, TERI University, etc. The topics in internship represent frontier areas like Eco-housing, Environmental Management Systems, Eco-design, GIS applications, Carbon Footprinting etc. In most cases, Interns have undertaken full time projects at their universities/institutions following the foundation work done with EMC. In some cases, the outputs from Interns have been accepted and published in international conferences
EMC has now restructured the EIP in a partnership model with companies/institutions. The idea is to provide students as well as young professionals better learning opportunities and offer a service to the companies and institutions by providing them with quality interns and potential human resources.
The proposed EIP will have three stages of internship- the Foundation stage, the Orientation stage and In-Company or Applied stage. While the first two stages will be completed at EMC, the Applied stage will be with the partner company/institution.

Integrated Solid Waste Management for Pune, India Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) attempts to address all critical solid waste streams (e.g. Municipal Solid Waste, Biomedical Waste, Plastic Waste, E-Waste, Industrial Hazardous Waste etc) in a strategic manner, focusing on Reduce, Recycle, Recover (3Rs) and considering the life cycle.
Dr Prasad Modak and team at EMC worked under a contract with UNEP International Environment Technology Centre (IETC) for Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in 2007-2008 to develop an ISWM Action Plan. This Plan was developed following "Vision to Action" process involving more than 150 stakeholders through six thematic workshops; supported by awareness raising and training programmes. A spreadsheet based computer model, captioned SIMWaste was developed and used to establish various scenarios and assess effectivenss of the proposed management measures. The PMC is now implementing many of the projects and programmes that were identified and developed in the ISWM Action Plan. Visit ISWM section under Publications to access the various resources developed under this project.
Do you think we can initiate such activities in your country/state/locality? If yes, please contact Prasad Modak at
